Kinship Guardianship

If you are caring for a relative child in foster care, you can become a permanent guardian, without going through the process of adoption, and receive assistance through the Kinship Guardianship Assistance Program (KinGAP) program.

  • KinGAP is for relatives who have been the foster parents to a child for at least six months.
  • KinGAP provides financial support and in most cases medical coverage for the child, beginning with the child’s discharge from foster care to the guardian.
  • The level of financial support is similar to the maintenance payments received while the child was in foster care.
