Community Engagement Framework - Casey Family Programs

In ACS's efforts to strengthen community collaboration, Casey Family Programs is supporting a groundbreaking Community Engagement Framework. The Framework facilitates a movement to advance equity and reconciliation between ACS and communities in order to build a shared vision for what collaboration looks like in practice. There are more than five community partner organizations, including individuals with lived experience, collaborating with ACS on this project.

As this team looks to year two, the focus will shift to piloting these principles and standards through joint-advocacy and planning projects with ACS and communities within various divisions. These "exploratory teams" will determine what works and what doesn't, identify successful and equitable collaboration strategies, recognize gaps in resources and training to support collaboration, and share lessons learned with one another. Their explorations will help pave a pathway to embedding collaborative planning, joint-advocacy, and anti-racist practices in ACS's efforts.

Founded in 1966, Casey Family Programs works in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and with tribal nations across North America to influence long-lasting improvements to the well-being of children, families and the communities where they live.

2022 Summer Pop-Up Shop - Glam4Good

For the second consecutive year, The GLAM4GOOD Foundation has partnered with ACS to host a Summer Pop-Up Shop for girls in the agency's care. In July, over 100 girls visited the GLAM4GOOD Headquarters to shop for new summer clothing, bathing suits, accessories, work wear, self-care items, eyewear and eye care, as well as other wardrobe and personal care essentials. The event, "#SUMMERINTHECITY", supported self-esteem by empowering young people with a fun, inspiring and free shopping experience.

The GLAM4GOOD Boutique also gave several ACS summer interns an opportunity to shop for brand new business attire and personal care items to support their participation in ACS career readiness initiatives, including mentoring and other internship programs. The interns also participated in a panel discussion facilitated by event leaders that focused on career pathways.

GLAM4GOOD is a nonprofit organization founded by Mary Alice Stephenson, a renowned fashion and beauty expert, style commentator, and humanitarian. GLAM4GOOD is a leading nonprofit that repurposes unused merchandise to address clothing and self-care insecurity in America. GLAM4GOOD bolsters self-esteem and empowers dignity while diverting industry excess to create opportunities for people in need.

2022 Citi Book Drive and Bike Donation

In May 2022, ACS and Citi, as part of Citi's annual Global Community Day, hosted a second annual virtual book drive, which resulted in the delivery of 2,400 books (5,000 in total over two-years) to children and teenagers across New York City. This partnership engaged Citi employee volunteers, who chose from a list of 365 books curated by ACS staff that are written by or about individuals that identify as Black, Hispanic/Latinx, Asian, Middle Eastern, North African and LGBTQIA+ individuals to ensure the selections reflected the diversity of New York City and the children and families served by ACS. Each book that was donated by a Citi volunteer was matched by Citi.

This partnership continues to encourage and promote early and diverse literacy and creativity. Books purchased by Citi volunteers through the virtual book drive were delivered to children and teens across the city, including those in foster care; those in the juvenile justice system; those temporarily residing at the Nicholas Scoppetta Children's Center and other ACS-involved youth. Books were also delivered to children and teens in the communities surrounding the agency's three Family Enrichment Centers in Hunts Point/Longwood and Highbridge in the Bronx and East New York in Brooklyn. The list of 365 was created by ACS staff participating in various cultural affinity groups including the Racial Equity and Cultural Competency Committee, Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Committee and the Latino Heritage Committee.

Citi also donated 50 bikes, along with helmets, bicycles locks and training and safety materials to ACS. The bikes and safety kits were distributed to ACS-served communities, including through Family Enrichment Centers, Prevention Services and the Parent Advocacy Council. This collaboration promoted physical fitness, independence and work readiness, as many youth were gifted bikes to help encourage safe and autonomous transportation to and from potential and existing jobs.

Citi is a leading global bank, preeminent banking partner for institutions with cross-border needs, doing business in more than 160 countries and jurisdictions.

W.K. Kellogg Foundation

The W. K. Kellogg Foundation granted New Yorkers for Children in partnership with ACS a $1.65 million grant to support five innovative projects: evaluation of Community Partnership Program; new research examining the correlation between poverty and child welfare involvement; Parents Empowering Parents; mainstreaming Restorative Justice across the Juvenile Justice continuum; and a new Vocational Education program for older foster youth. ACS is striving to address racial disproportionality that has historically existed in the child welfare system by continuing to implement bold new endeavors to move away from correctional responses and toward more preventative family support. These five projects are cornerstone to this vision.

The W.K. Kellogg Foundation (WKKF) founded in 1930 as an independent, private foundation by breakfast cereal innovator and entrepreneur Will Keith Kellogg, is among the largest philanthropic foundations in the United States. Guided by the belief that all children should have an equal opportunity to thrive, WKKF works with communities to create conditions for vulnerable children so they can realize their full potential in school, work and life.
