Toys for Metropolitan's Kids
On Friday December 21, 2012, members of the HHC Office of Special Projects surprised patients in Metropolitan's Pediatric waiting room with holiday gifts. Over one hundred children received presents, which included a Kiwicrate, a small boxed activity craft that allows children to make a xylophone. The gifts were donated though the Fund for HHC's partnership with Carnegie Hall.
Holiday Magic at Metropolitan
Celebrity magician David Blaine brought holiday cheer to the children of Metropolitan Hospital, entertaining pediatric patients and attendees at the hospital's annual holiday event on Saturday, December 15, 2012. More than 550 children attended the party, where Santa Claus distributed presents gathered from various gift/toy drives organized by volunteers, community members and hospital staff throughout the year. Clowns, performers, and face-painting artists were also on hand to add to the holiday fun.
Learn With Us: Holiday Season and Stress - Effective Coping Strategies
On Thursday, December 20, 2012, Dr. Ronnie Swift, Chief of Psychiatry at Metropolitan Hospital Center, provided an informative overview of depression and ways to manage stress, cope with loss, and handle emotional challeges during the holiday season. Learn With Us: Breast Health - What All Women Should Know
On Friday, October 26, 2012, Anitha Srinivasan, MD, MPH, FACS, Attending Surgeon at Metropolitan Hospital Center, discussed breast health issues for women of all ages. She spoke about the important role of early detection and treatment. Dr. Srinvasan was joined by Gerlyn Lucas, a breast cancer survivor, journalist and published author, who shared her personal experiences and urged women to take time out for preventative care. Attendees learned about routine preventative care, including breast lumps and cysts, surgical options, and new developments in breast health. This very informative and, at times, emotional conversation was enjoyed by all who attended this standing-room only event. View Flyer
Path to Wellness and Recovery Forum at Metropolitan
The Metropolitan Hospital Center Community Advisory Board hosted the Path to Wellness and Recovery Forum on Saturday, October 20. Attendees enjoyed spirited discussions with doctors, specialists, and social workers who shared information on a wide range of mental health issues, including depression, drug and alcohol abuse, and veterans health issues.View Flyer
New York Family Magazine Selects Metropolitan's Sarla Inamdar as One of NYC's Top Pediatricians
Dr. Sarla Inamdar, Chief of Pediatrics at Metropolitan Hospital Center, was named one of the city's top pediatricians, according to New York Family magazine. Dr. Inamdar was selected as one of 162 doctors, and is one of the nine doctors highlighted in the article. The annual list of the pediatricians and pediatric specialists, nominated and ranked by their peers, is intended as a guide for parents looking to find a provider for their children. Metropolitan Hospital Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month
Metropolitan Hospital Center celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month on Friday, October 5, 2012 with a day full of health information, arts, and entertainment. As part of Take Care New York, hospital staff and representatives from local community based organizations offered a variety of health screenings at little or no cost, including HIV testing, nutritional counseling, smoking cessation information and much more. The annual event included cultural exhibits and artisan was also part of Binational Health Week, and offered in collaboration with the Consulates of Mexico and Colombia. Learn With Us: Back-to-School - Staying Healthy for Kids and Adults
On Tuesday, September 25, 2012, at 3:30 pm Dr. Jason Mack, Attending Physician at Metropolitan Hospital Center, led a discussion on how to prepare your children for school and how to keep them healthy throughout the whole year. Participants, including school age children, learned about avoiding infections and the important role of healthy nutrition. Health concerns affecting our community such as asthma, ADHD, anemia, and lead poisoning were addressed. It was a lively discussion with great audience participation. Learn With Us: Eating Right for Life
On September 6, 2012, Dr. Nadia Duvilaire, Chief of Family Medicine at Metropolitan Hospital Center, led a discussion on eating right for every stage of life as part of the Learn with Us educational series. Participants at the Metropolitan Hospital Family Health Center (La Cínica Del Barrio) event learned about portion size, calorie counting, vitamins and supplements, and the role of exercise. Learn With Us: Bone Health and Orthopedics
On August 12, 2012, Metropolitan Hospital Center kicked off the Learn with Us educational series with a presentation by Dr. Tyler Lucas, Chief of the Division of Orthopedic Surgery. Dr. Lucas discussed diagnosis and treatment of common orthopedics and sports injuires, with a special focus on keeping bones healthy and strong. The discussion included a Q&A session, where patients, staff, and community members were able to get detailed information about specific concerns. A light lunch was served full of nutrients to promote bone health. Harvest Home Metropolitan Farmers Market Returns
Metropolitan Hospital Center and its Community Advisory Board have joined forces again with Harvest Home Inc. to promote affordable, healthy dietary options for patients, visitors, staff, and residents of East Harlem and the Upper East Side. The market features fresh fruit and vegetables from local farms, and is part of a citywide effort to combat obesity and help New Yorkers stay healthy. Shoppers can pay for their purchases a number of ways: cash, EBT cards (food stamps), Green Checks, Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) coupons, WIC coupons, and Health Bucks. Health Bucks, worth $2 each, can be used to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at participating farmers markets. If you use food stamps, you will receive a Health Buck for every $5 you spend at the farmers market. The Harvest Home Metropolitan Farmers Market is open every Friday through November 16, from 8 AM to 5 PM. View Flyer
Power of Aging Well Annual Health Festival
Metropolitan Hospital Center's Power of Aging Well Annual Health Festival took place on Thursday, June 21, 2012 in Thomas Jefferson Park. Presented in collaboration with NYC City Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn, NYC Council Member Melissa Mark-Viverito, and the NYC Department for the Aging, the event offered entertainment, art, exercise, and health screenings, along with a vast array of health-related information for seniors. Despite the hot weather, the festival was well attended, and all enjoyed an educational and entertaining event. View Flyer
Ribbon Cutting for New Pediatric Inpatient Unit
Metropolitan Hospital Center celebrated the grand opening of a new Inpatient Pediatric Unit with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday, May 15. The new unit combines state-of-the-art equipment in an environment that fosters patient safety and care along with the comfort of patients and their caregivers.
Slavic Soul Party Performance
Metropolitan Hospital Center, along with Musical Connections, a program of the Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall, welcomed Slavic Soul Party for a free musical concert at noon in the hospital's main lobby. Slavic Soul Party consists of nine musicians who play a blend of Balkan soul, Gypsy funk, jazz and Latin music. The hour-long performance included a tribute to nurses.
Cinco de Mayo Health Fair
On Friday, May 4, Metropolitan Hospital hosted a Cinco de Mayo Health Fair, sponsored by Healthfirst. Representatives from the Mexican Consulate joined hospital staff and community based organizations at the event, which featured mariachis, a live DJ, face painting and a wide range of valuable health information, including blood pressure and glucose screenings. The festival celebrated the rich history and diversity of Metropolitan Hospital's community.
El Diario Honors Elizabeth Guzman, CFO
Elizabeth Guzman, Chief Financial Officer at Metropolitan Hospital Center, was honored at El Diario-La Prensa's 17th annual Mujeres Destacadas luncheon celebrating "Latinas who are doing amazing work." The April 13th event highlighted the achievements of outstanding women who, by their excellence in a range of fields, serve as role models, inspirations, and mentors for young Latinas. Sospiro Winds Performs Concert
On Wednesday, January 25, patients, visitors, medical staff and hospital employees enjoyed a free lunchtime concert, courtesy of Sospiro Winds. The wind quintet, hailed as a "superb ensemble" and an exciting new force on the chamber music scene, performed a crowd-pleasing selection of classical, folk, and Latin music. The special event was presented by Metropolitan Hospital Center in collaboration with Musical Connections, a program of the Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall.
Clarissa Spatas Sings at Metropolitan Hopsital Center

Metropolitan welcomed Clarissa Spatas, a rising Australian opera talent, for a special concert in the hospital's pediatric unit on January 17. Ms. Spatas performed a number of songs for an audience of patients, family, school children, and volunteers. The event was presented in collaboration with Soaringwords, which inspires hospitalized children nationwide to "Never give up!"
Metropolitan Hospital Center Welcomes Our First Baby of 2012
Mother Blanca and baby Dante Jeremiah Chano celebrate 2012 along with Dr. Adrian Roznowski and Attending Physician Gladys Lee-Hwang.
Dante Jeremiah Chano was the first baby born at Metropoiltan in the New Year and the first HHC baby of 2012. Weighing in at 8 lbs. 5.5 oz, and measuring 20 inches, Dante arrived at 12:02 AM. Mother Blanca and son were both doing well and spent New Year's Day resting, while enjoying all of the excitement that accompanies a New Year's baby. Dante joined siblings Adrian Justis, Brianna Justine, and Chastity Jaylene, all delivered at Metropolitan Hospital. We wish Dante Jeremiah and all of our Metropolitan babies and their families health and happiness.
