New York City Department of Transportation announced traffic deaths reached the lowest level in recorded history during the first six months of 2025. Data released by NYC DOT shows across-the-board declines in traffic deaths involving pedestrians as well as riders or occupants of traditional bikes, e-bikes, stand-up scooters, mopeds, motorcycles, cars, and SUVs.
An across-the-board decline in deaths of pedestrians, cyclists, operators of motorized two-wheelers, and motor vehicle occupants underscores the success of Vision Zero and the importance of street safety work advanced under the Adams administration. There were 41 traffic deaths during the first three months of 2025 — 24 fewer than last year and the second fewest of any year in recorded history (there were 40 to start 2018).
Since the start of the Vision Zero initiative in 2014, the equitable distribution of street improvements has been at the center of our mission to bring road safety to every corner of the five boroughs.

The NYC Vision Zero Task Force announced the winner of an inaugural Vision Zero Research Award at the seventh convening of Research on the Road, a Vision Zero Taskforce-led conference. This non-monetary award from New York City's Vision Zero Task Force honors researchers who study ways to improve road safety and advance the goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and serious injuries on city streets.
