Diagnostic Services

Diagnostic services are offered both on an elective and emergency basis. We specialize in minimally invasive and endoscopic imaging techniques in state-of-the-art facilities.  Services include cardiac catheterization, sleep study center, EEG and EMG testing for brain and muscle function, pulmonary function testing and non-invasive cardiology.  Below are a few examples of the excellent diagnostic services the hospital offers to the Central Brooklyn community.

Bronchoscopy

A bronchoscopy is a routine diagnostic procedure that lets your doctor see inside your lungs and possibly get tissue to examine. Since 1975, Kings County Hospital Center’s team of dedicated bronchoscopy specialists has been serving the Brooklyn community on an inpatient and outpatient basis.

Cardiac Catheterization

Our Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory enables doctors to perform a procedure -- known as cardiac catheterization -- to check how the heart's chambers, valves, and blood vessels are functioning. Before being referred to our Cardiac Catheterization Lab, many patients will undergo a non-invasive diagnostic evaluation, which may include an echocardiogram and a cardiovascular stress test. In addition to diagnosing certain heart problems, cardiac catheterization can also be performed to treat certain types of heart disease.

KCHC's new Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory will enable us to perform 600 cardiac catheterizations each year, and will serve out-patients and in-patients who are experiencing chest pain (angina) and a possible heart attack (myocardial infarction), who are in heart failure, or have heart valve disease.

In addition, we provide ongoing care for patients with every type of heart disease in our General Cardiac Clinic. The clinic, which is open one-half day each week, provides diagnostic and treatment services by appointment for continuity of care.

Colonoscopy

Cancer of the colon is the second leading cause of cancer deaths for adults over 60 years of age. According to New York City's Health Department, nearly 250,000 New Yorkers age 50 and over have undetected colon polyps which, left unchecked, will develop into cancer for up to 20,000 of these New Yorkers in the next 20 years.

Kings County Hospital Center provides routine colon cancer screening for patients over the age of 50, and those high-risk patients with a family history of colorectal cancer will be screened at age 40 and above.

Radiology

Kings County Hospital Center’s Department of Radiology uses state-of-the-art technology to diagnose and treat many types of illnesses through the use of interventional radiology, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) positron emission tomography (PET) and a linear accelerator.

Kings County Hospital Center was the first Brooklyn hospital to offer PET scanning technology that gives physicians a precise way of measuring the chemical and physical changes in the body’s cells, detecting abnormalities and allowing for timelier treatment. We were also among the first facilities in Brooklyn to acquire a linear accelerator which is used on targets within the brain and to treat areas outside of the brain.

Sleep Disorders

The Sleep Disorders Diagnostic Center  (SDDC) specializes in helping residents who suffer from sleeplessness including insomnia, sleep apnea, and other sleep disorders improve their sleep at our state-of-the-art sleep study center.  The symptoms of sleep problems when left untreated can lead to serious health problems. We treat patients using the most modern of techniques in a comfortable setting to determine how to improve their rest and optimize their health.

The SDDC is in a quiet setting away from noise and traffic. We offer a tranquil environment with the comforts of home including video games for kids and hotel-like surroundings in six specially designed rooms. Amenities include a king or queen size bed, flat screen TV, and private bathrooms. Our goal is to create a peaceful experience for each patient.
