I got my first mammogram when I was in my early 20s because I discovered fibrocystic lumps in my breast during a self examination and had to have them removed. I began getting my annual mammograms at 35 years because of my family history of fibro-cystic breasts. It is important to know your family history and to take good care of your body. A mammogram may not be pleasant but it is necessary. I encourage my female colleagues, family and friends 40 years or older to get a mammogram every year.

My mother and sister died from cancer and I knew the importance of early detection because it saved my life. I began getting my annual mammogram when I turned 40. One year during my self-examination I felt a lump. A mammogram and further testing revealed it was a cancerous spot. I got a lumpectomy and received my treatment at Queens Hospital’s Cancer Center. I recommend to my female family, friends and colleagues 40 or older to get an annual mammogram. |
