HHC Bellevue Hospital Center Ranked Top Performer on Quality Patient Care Measures

New York, NY – The New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) today announced that HHC Bellevue Hospital Center in Manhattan has been ranked as a “Top Performer on Key Quality Measures” by the Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of health care organizations in the U.S. The hospital was specifically recognized for high achievement in four important fields of patient care: heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care.

The Joint Commission’s “Top Performer” designation recognizes hospitals for improving performance on medical interventions that increase the chance for positive outcomes for patients with certain conditions. Only 45 – 28 percent – of the 160 hospitals in New York State ranked by the The Joint Commission for 2013 achieved top performer designation in any area.

"We thank the Joint Commission for recognizing our efforts with its ‘Top Performer’ designation," said Steven R. Alexander, Bellevue Hospital Center Executive Director. "I am proud of the Bellevue staff for its commitment to providing quality care for our patients and always striving to do better. Meeting the Joint Commissions’ rigorous standards is a validation of our dedication to provide the best outcomes for our patients each and every day."

Quality measures that The Joint Commission examines in determining “Top Performer” status include research, accuracy of the care process, proximity of the care process to patient health outcomes, and adverse effects. To be a Joint Commission “Top Performer” hospitals had to meet three performance criteria based on 2013 accountability measure data, including: performance of 95 percent or above across all reported accountability measures; performance of 95 percent or above on each accountability measure where there were at least 30 cases; and at least one core measure set with a composite rate of 95 percent or above with all applicable individual accountability measures rated 95 percent or above.

“Delivering the right treatment in the right way at the right time is a cornerstone of high-quality health care. I commend the efforts of HHC Bellevue Hospital Center for their excellent performance on the use of evidence-based interventions,” said Mark R. Chassin, M.D., FACP, M.P.P., M.P.H., president and CEO, The Joint Commission.
