Henry Gittens

Henry Gittens, Watch Engineer

How would you describe your job to a 5th grader?

I have a very exciting and challenging job. I am a shift supervisor. When I come to work most other workers are finishing up their work and are getting ready to return to their homes.

What is the most interesting part of your job?

The most interesting part of my job is that as a shift supervisor, I get to represent my boss during off hours at work by making sure that everything is operating good and safe.

What is your schedule like?

My work schedule is known as Rotating Shifts. Which means, at times I work from 3:00pm to 11:00pm, and at other times from 11:00pm to 7:00am. Once a month I also work six days during normal daily working hours, 7:00am to 3:00pm.

What is it like to work at the largest wastewater treatment plant?

I feel it is a privilege and a sense of pride to have the opportunity to work at the largest wastewater treatment plant in this great City of New York.

Has anything exciting happened to you on the job?

The most exciting thing that I have experienced is seeing many changes occur, where new equipment and new machinery replaced old equipment and old machinery. It is very exciting to start up and run some of these new machines and equipment.

What is the most important aspect of your job?

I consider very important 1) the safety of the men that I supervise, 2) the safe and good operation of all the machinery and equipment, and 3) to make sure that we operate and maintain all the plant equipment as we have been trained and directed to do.

How long have you worked at the plant?

I have been working at the plant for a total of 18 years.
