Data Tool

The Poverty Research Team created a data tool which allows users to access NYC Opportunity's poverty rates.

The NYC Government Poverty Measure differs from the official poverty measure in 2 fundamental ways:

  1. It expands the scope of the resources it accounts for in determining poverty. In addition to pre-tax cash (the income measure used in the official measure), our measure includes the effect of income and payroll taxes, and the value of in-kind nutritional and housing assistance. Non-discretionary spending for commuting to work, childcare, and out-of-pocket medical care are accounted for as deductions from income.
  2. We adjust a U.S.-wide threshold developed for the Census Bureau's Supplemental Poverty Measure to reflect the relatively high cost of housing in New York City.

The NYC Government Poverty Data Tool

The data tool displays NYC Opportunity's poverty rates for select population groups by different demographic characteristics as sample size allows.When the sample size is too small to generate reliable results, the demographic selection buttons are de-selected.
