Behavioral Health Services
Health insurance provides mental and substance use disorder benefits to help you get the care you need. Behavioral health services are considered essential health benefits under the Affordable Care Act.
The Mayor’s Office of Community Mental Health has produced a helpful guide outlining the topics that you should consider as you prepare to seek behavioral health services. All comprehensive health care plans must cover the following health services:
- Behavioral health treatment, such as psychotherapy and counseling
- Mental and behavioral health inpatient services, such as psychiatric hospitalization
- Substance use disorder (commonly known as substance abuse) treatment
