New York, New York – New York City Police Department Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch today announced the appointment of Edward A. Thompson as Interim Chief of Internal Affairs, effective immediately.
“Above all else, the NYPD Internal Affairs Bureau must always be dedicated to preserving integrity and rooting out corruption in all its forms,” said NYPD Commissioner Tisch. “It is an essential function that is crucial to maintaining honor and nobility in the profession and preserving public trust. Chief Thompson is up to the task.”
Chief Thompson is a 38-year veteran of the NYPD who served in the Internal Affairs Bureau – including as Commanding Officer of Internal Affairs SIU, Zone 1, and the Office of the Chief of Internal Affairs – for a decade.
He has also served as the Commanding Officer of the Fugitive Enforcement Division, the Quality Assurance Division, and the Homeless Outreach and Shelter Security Division, as well as Chief of Enforcement at the New York City Department of Sanitation. Chief Thompson is a graduate of the 207th Session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.
Chief Thompson succeeds former Chief of Internal Affairs Miguel Iglesias, who earlier today was relieved of his command and has notified the Department of his intent to retire.
