NYPD Announces Citywide Crime Statistics for November 2023

Continued Reductions Experienced Across Most Major Crime Categories

Overall crime in New York City dropped again in November and remains down year to date, led by continued reductions in five of the seven major index crime categories as well as the ongoing curtailment of shooting incidents citywide. Significantly, 405 fewer people have been shot in New York City this year through the end of November, compared to the same period last year.

“Month after month, the NYPD continues to deliver on its public safety promise,” said Police Commissioner Edward A. Caban. “There is always more work to do in every neighborhood, of course, and the men and women dedicated to protecting New York City are relentless in their mission. Each day and night, they work in concert with all the people we serve to increase safety and enhance quality of life.”

The city saw an 18.8% reduction in shooting incidents during the month of November 2023, compared to November 2022 (65 v. 80), extending the 25.4% decline in shooting incidents year to date (902 v. 1,209). Nineteen fewer people were shot in November 2023 compared to the same month last year. Notably, two fewer people were murdered this November compared to November 2022, continuing the 10.9% reduction in murders citywide year to date (358 v. 402).

In November 2023, the NYPD made 326 arrests for gun possession citywide, bringing the total number of year-to-date gun arrests to 4,079. So far this year through the end of the month, firearm seizures totaled 5,993 citywide, increasing the number of guns removed by police from the streets of New York City to 13,128 since January 1, 2022.    

Overall index crime declined 4.1% in November 2023 compared to the same month last year (10,009 v. 10,440), with individual drops in murder, rape, robbery, burglary, and grand larceny. Increases were seen in two categories during November: Felony assault rose 0.9% (2,110 v. 2,092) and grand larceny—auto increased 7.1% (1,218 v. 1,137). Year to date compared to the same period last year, overall crime decreased by 866 crimes citywide.

Arrests for major index crimes citywide increased 12.5% (4,520 v. 4,018) in November compared to a year ago, and rose 12% year to date (49,031 v. 43,772). Arrests across all categories increased 14.8% in November (19,135 v. 16,663), and rose 19.9% year to date (209,149 v. 174,460).

The number of bias incidents investigated by the NYPD Hate Crime Task Force continued its downward trend by dropping 6% (568 v. 603) year to date. For the month of November compared to the same month last year, HCTF involvement increased by 24 cases, or 33% (96 v. 72).

Overall crime in the New York City transit system decreased 2.5% year to date (2,084 v. 2,137). In comparing November 2023 to November 2022, crime rose by 21 incidents, or 10.1% (228 v. 207), driven by felony assaults on members of law enforcement and by grand larceny, a category that includes the stealing of purses, wallets, and other personal items belonging to subway riders that are taken without the use or threat of physical force. Crime in city housing developments decreased 8.8% during the month of November (454 v. 498).
