The New York City Police Department today announced the launch of the third season of “Break in the Case,” an original podcast in the true-crime genre that offers listeners a glimpse into actual criminal investigations.
The unique, long-form stories portray the work of the women and men of the NYPD and their interactions with the people and communities they serve. In many instances, the accounts are pulled from the Detective Bureau’s original casefiles while the narratives feature officers – in their own voices – as they revisit crime scenes to offer invaluable insights and colorful recollections.
Season Three of the podcast is centered on one of the NYPD’s most notorious cases from the 1990s: The New York Zodiac Copycat.
Between 1990 and 1996, a serial killer evaded capture while sending taunting notes to the media and the police. The seven-part limited series features detectives from the Zodiac Task Force describing the case’s many challenges, their tireless efforts working through investigative dead ends, and the unlikely turn of events that ultimately led to an arrest.
“Break in the Case” is written and produced by the NYPD’s Jill Bauerle and Kenzie De Laine and supported by the independent nonprofit New York City Police Foundation. The podcast’s narrator, retired Detective Sergeant Wally Zeins, worked at the NYPD from 1973 to 2003. New episodes will publish every Tuesday and are available on all major podcast platforms, including Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
