Statement on the NYC Budget Agreement for Fiscal Year 2015

Shola Olatoye, Chair and CEO of the New York City Housing Authority

We would like to thank Mayor Bill de Blasio, Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, Council Member Ritchie Torres and the New York City Council for vision and action, and for recognizing the crucial need for support services, safety measures and security programs that serve public housing residents, and therefore the whole City of New York.

On behalf of the many seniors and youth who benefit from NYCHA’s 57 Community Centers in dozens of neighborhoods, we’re relieved to know they will continue to receive the support these programs and sites provide. Whether it’s simply a place to gather, stay engaged after school, or gain access to a job program, these centers offer an essential community core for residents of public housing and their neighborhoods. We appreciate the Mayor and the Council’s bold decision to make a real difference with dollars from the new City Budget Agreement.

NYCHA remains highly focused on its mission to provide safe affordable housing, while connecting residents to community services. Working in close collaboration with this administration, I am committed to resetting relationships, driving efficiency, and improving customer service at NYCHA.

We are also working closely with Mayor’s Office to craft details for the NYCHA-focused Safety and Security Plan, finalizing sites, programs and scope.

Thank you.
