NYC Marks ADA35 and Disability Pride Month with Citywide Celebration and Continued Commitment to Inclusion

New York, NY – As Disability Pride Month comes to a close, the NYC Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities (MOPD) is reflecting on a powerful July filled with community pride, interagency collaboration, and citywide recognition of the 35th anniversary of the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Throughout July, MOPD proudly uplifted dozens of events hosted across the five boroughs that celebrated Disability Pride and honored the legacy of the ADA. A full listing of these events is available at nyc.gov/ada35.

To mark this milestone, Mayor Eric Adams released a video message reaffirming New York City’s unwavering commitment to equity, access, and full inclusion for New Yorkers with disabilities. In his remarks, the Mayor celebrated the progress made under his administration and emphasized the continued importance of this work.

The official ADA35 press release, issued by City Hall earlier this week, highlights key accomplishments achieved under the Adams administration, including connecting over 1,200 New Yorkers with disabilities to employment and expanding inclusive hiring efforts through NYC:ATWORK, the City’s signature workforce development initiative for jobseekers with disabilities.

In addition, Commissioner Christina Curry of MOPD and Commissioner Dynashal Gross of the NYC Department of Small Business Services co-authored an op-ed published in the New York Daily News titled “Disabilities Aren’t a Barrier to a Job”, underscoring the administration’s commitment to employment equity for people with disabilities.

“None of this would be possible without the tireless efforts of MOPD’s dedicated staff,” said Commissioner Curry. “Their daily commitment to advancing disability inclusion across all facets of city life ensures that New York continues to lead as a model of equity and opportunity for all.”

As the City looks ahead, MOPD remains steadfast in its mission to ensure that all New Yorkers with disabilities can fully participate in and contribute to civic, economic, and cultural life.
