We, the cities comprising the Coalition of Mayor’s Offices for People with Disabilities, celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a landmark civil rights law that has resulted in greater inclusion and independence for people with disabilities.
While celebrating how very far our nation and cities have come in the past 35 years in including people with disabilities, we acknowledge the attitudinal, structural, and systemic barriers that still stand in the way of full equality and inclusion. As disability advocates within our city governments, we reaffirm our commitment to breaking down those barriers and advancing the ADA's vision of a truly accessible and inclusive society for all.
This joint statement is issued by municipal officials responsible for disability services and advocacy in the following cities: Boston, Cambridge, Chicago, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and St. Louis
