Broadway Looks ‘Fun’ This Month

April 15, 2015 - The Broadway season is in full swing as a new plays, musicals, and revivals – featuring kings, brides, and puppets – are currently in previews and opening soon.

Airline Highway at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre takes place at a rundown hotel in New Orleans as residents gather to pay tribute to burlesque dancer.

Featuring classic Gershwin tunes, An American in Paris transfers from the screen to the stage with the story of a young soldier falling in love with Paris and a Parisienne. Performances are underway at the Palace Theatre.

Another classic film is getting the musical treatment with Doctor Zhivago at the Broadway Theatre. The lives and loves of five characters are explored in early 20th century Russia.

After a successful off Broadway run, Fun Home comes to Circle in the Square Theatre. The musical follows a woman who discovers more about herself and her family following the death of her father.

At the Neil Simon Theatre, Gigi, starring Vanessa Hudgens, recreates the story of a young woman in La Belle Epoque Paris, who has been destined to become a courtesan but takes matters into her own hands.

Hand to God at the Booth Theatre features a puppet who takes on a life of his own in a small town in Texas.

In the new musical, It Shoulda Been You, emotions are at their breaking point in the hours leading up to a wedding. Tyne Daly, Harriet Harris, Lisa Howard, and Sierra Boggess lead the cast at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre.

The King and I returns to Broadway in a new production at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre starring Kelli O’Hara as a schoolteacher who travels to Bangkok to teach the children of the King of Siam, played by Ken Watanabe.

Transferring from the West End to the Golden Theatre, Skylight is a new play by David Hare. Bill Nighy stars as a man who is hoping to reconcile with his former lover, played by Carey Mulligan.

At the St. James Theatre, the new musical Something Rotten! traces the origins of the first musical and the rivalry between Shakespeare and the less well known Bottom brothers.

Chita Rivera returns to the stage in The Visit, the final Broadway musical by John Kander and Fred Ebb. Rivera stars as a rich woman who has a vengeful request for her hometown.

Based on the novels by Hilary Mantel, Wolf Hall Parts One and Two chart the rise and fall of Henry VIII and Thomas Cromwell. The Royal Shakespeare Company takes up residency at the Winter Garden Theatre for the plays’ run.
