The Public Engagement Unit (PEU) has been conducting ongoing outreach to spread the word about Fair Fares NYC, a City benefit that helps low-income New Yorkers afford their transportation costs. Along with other transit discounts, you can ride the subway for half price with Fair Fares NYC! Check your eligibility and apply at nyc.gov/FairFares.

Fair Fares NYC provides a 50% discount on subway and eligible bus fares, as well as MTA Access-A-Ride paratransit trips. It is available to eligible New Yorkers between the ages of 18 and 64 whose income falls at or below 145% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL), regardless of immigration status.

Fair Fares NYC now follows the One Metro New York (OMNY) payment system. In place of the Fair Fares MetroCard, new enrollees will now receive the OMNY card. Current Fair Fares MetroCard holders can request an OMNY card through ACCESS HRA. They can also receive an OMNY card when they renew their program enrollment or request a replacement card. The Fair Fares NYC MetroCard can still be used until it expires, or 30 days after the OMNY card request or program enrollment renewal, whichever comes first.

More than a quarter of a million New Yorkers receive the reduced-fare MetroCard benefit, saving New Yorkers more than $50 million by contributing an equal share to ridership for those low-income individuals in need. Yet, many more New Yorkers still qualify and need to enroll. That's why PEU has been working with the Human Resources Administration (HRA)'s Fair Fares NYC to reach hundreds of thousands of these New Yorkers to support them in enrolling.

PEU has sent over 550,000 texts to New Yorkers since the summer of 2022 and continues to conduct follow-up calls and other proactive outreach to get the word out to those who qualify. PEU and HRA hosted an outreach Day of Action to connect New Yorkers across the five boroughs to Fair Fares NYC.
