Welcome to the New York City Law Department.
The Law Department represents the City of New York, the Mayor, the City Council, the Comptroller, other elected officials, and the City’s agencies in all affirmative and defensive civil litigation as well as in financial transactions. The Department’s attorneys draft and review local and state legislation, real estate leases, procurement contracts, and financial instruments for the sale of municipal bonds. We also provide legal counsel to City officials on a wide range of issues such as civil rights, education, intellectual property, land use, environmental policy, and risk assessments to avoid litigation in the first place. Our support professionals and lawyers are dedicated public servants who work tirelessly to contribute to a shared purpose: providing exceptional legal counsel to our City for the benefit of its residents. The Law Department’s work impacts all areas of daily living in New York City.
