Property Tax Rebate - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

The property tax rebate is for homeowners whose New York City property is their primary residence and whose combined income is $250,000 or less.

Most recipients of the School Tax Relief (STAR) exemption or credit will automatically qualify and will not need to take any action in order to receive the rebate. Some STAR recipients may be asked to provide additional information.

If you are not currently receiving STAR, but believe you may qualify for the rebate, you can submit an application. Please see the Application section for more details.

We expect to mail most checks in August of 2022. If you do not receive your check by the end of September, please contact us at www.nyc.gov/dofcustomerservice.

Please note that you will only be mailed a check if you are up to date on your property taxes. If you owe outstanding property taxes, the rebate will be applied as a credit to your account, reducing or eliminating the taxes you owe.

The Department of Finance will not be issuing replacement checks. If the check you receive is damaged, please send it to the mailing address below. The rebate amount will be applied as a credit to your property tax account.

You may submit your additional information online. Applying online is the easiest way to apply, and if eligible you will receive your rebate more quickly. If you are not able to apply online, you can download and complete a paper application.

Please allow up to four weeks for the Department of Finance to process your additional information or your application and issue your check, if we determine that you are eligible for the rebate. If you do not receive your check within four weeks, contact us at www.nyc.gov/dofcustomerservice.

If you are eligible for a rebate, you will receive a check in August of 2022. If you do not receive a check by the end of September, but feel that you meet the eligibility requirements, please apply online for the rebate.
