NYC DOC Celebrates ‘Spirit Day’ and Opens New Wellness Centers


On May 7, DOC celebrated the opening of serenity rooms at West Facility (WF) and the George R. Vierno Center (GRVC).


For the second consecutive year, NYC DOC’s Executive Leadership, Officers and staff boldly lined up on Hazen Street on Rikers Island to show their appreciation to the heroes coming to and from work in celebration of National Correctional Officers and Employees Week (COEW).   
  
The festive “Spirit Day” on May 8 was one of many special events that took place from May 4-10 in honor of the nationwide recognition for correctional professionals.

 

The festive “Spirit Day” on May 8 featured cheers from Executive Leadership and many others to help thank our heroes for their dedicated service. 


This year’s events included the grand opening of wellness centers on Rikers Island as well. On May 7, DOC opened serenity rooms at West Facility (WF) and the George R. Vierno Center (GRVC). The new space at WF is also equipped with a Barista Café for staff to utilize during meals and breaks.   

The following day, the Department opened a new gym, refurbished lounge and serenity room at the Rose M. Singer Center (RMSC), as well as a serenity room at the Eric M. Taylor Center (EMTC).
