DOC Remembers the Fallen and Honors Staff During COEW

The special closing ceremony for National Correctional Officers and Employees Week included a commemoration at NYCDOC’s 9/11 Memorial on Rikers Island.

NYC DOC’s celebration of National Correctional Officers and Employees Week (COEW) culminated on May 9 with a special ceremony on Rikers Island to remember our fallen heroes and honor staff for their outstanding public service.

Led by Commissioner Lynelle Maginley-Liddie, members gathered at the Department’s 9/11 Memorial to place a wreath in remembrance of our emergency responders who have died from World Trade Center-related illnesses.

Following the commemoration, New York City Chief Agency Liaison for the Deputy Mayor of Public Safety Horace Norville presented a proclamation to the Department on behalf of Mayor Eric Adams. The decree also recognized DOC’s 130 years of service.

This year’s COEW honorees included our four-legged heroes in the K-9 Unit and their handlers, as well as our Communications Unit, Criminal Justice Bureau, Donald Cranston Judicial Center and Workforce Development Unit.

The festivities also featured Executive Leadership serving lunch to our bold Correction Officers and staff to help show appreciation for their continuous dedication.

“While respect in New York City doesn’t come easy, we have risen to the occasion time and again and earned respect. Our recent history is filled with achievements that changed how the correctional field operates. We have introduced innovations in programs, community partnerships, housing, security, correctional education, and enforcement,” Commissioner Maginley-Liddie said. “We have been leaders in history and in the lessons of textbooks. Never forget that when the history is written, we hold the pen. This is what it means to be bold. Bold is innovation. Bold is the bravery to try new things. Bold is adapting our strategies and tactics to what we’ve learned. I am so proud of this Department and everyone who works for it.”
