DOC Cold Weather Protocol

December 10, 2019

  • We take numerous precautions, including taking regular temperature readings, providing blankets, hot beverages, and warm clothing if needed, and even relocating individuals if a cold temperature situation can’t be quickly resolved.
  • During extreme cold weather conditions, temperatures are monitored regularly in housing areas with reported temperatures below 68° F.
  • Individuals in our custody can also call 311 from housing area phones, free of charge, if they want to communicate to anyone in the community about their current conditions.
  • In case of brownout and blackout conditions, each DOC facility has a back-up generator to provide temporary electrical service.
  • CHS clinics are open 24/7 to evaluate patients who are experiencing cold weather related symptoms.
  • Our cold weather protocol has been in place since October in advance of approaching cold weather months.
