East Elmhurst, NY — The New York City Department of Correction and NYC Public Schools’ East River Academy today celebrate the graduation of 63 people in custody. With 757 enrollments this year, this is the largest class of people to earn their high school diploma or equivalency (GED) since 2014.
The graduation will be held at the Robert N. Davoren Center (R.N.D.C.) This year’s ceremony will honor emergent adults who actively engaged in educational programming while housed at George R. Vierno Center (G.R.V.C.), Rose M. Singer Center (R.M.S.C.), and R.N.D.C.
“This year’s record-breaking graduation is a powerful testament to the determination of our students and the tireless efforts of our staff,” said NYC Department of Correction Commissioner Lynelle Maginley-Liddie. “Education is a powerful tool for personal development and critical for long-term success, and this is especially true for those reentering the community. These graduates are proving what’s possible and I can't wait to see what their future holds.”
“Completing high school is a major milestone in each young person's life, and I am so proud to celebrate our East River Academy graduates,” said Chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos. “Every student deserves access to a high-quality education, without interruption, and I also commend our District 79 team and the Department of Correction for their ongoing collaboration and partnership as we continue to support our students in the coming years."
"This incredible achievement highlights the dedication of East River Academy's leadership, instructional and support staff, who have worked tirelessly to provide educational opportunities that empower individuals in custody,” said NYCPS Superintendent Glenda Esperance. “Through expanded learning spaces, innovative programs, and continuous mentorship, we have created an environment where education fosters personal growth and rehabilitation. Our graduates exemplify the success of this partnership between NYC Public Schools and the Department of Correction, proving that literacy and learning can open doors to a brighter future. As we celebrate the graduates’ achievements, we also reaffirm our commitment to breaking down barriers, supporting second chances, and ensuring that education remains a source of hope and transformation."
The Educational Services Unit, part of the Department’s Division of Programs and Community Partnerships, has played a pivotal role in expanding access to learning opportunities. Key advancements this year include:
• Expansion of classroom space on R.N.D.C.’s main school floor
• Re-establishment of the “old” Annex school at RNDC
• Training and assignment of steady school officers
• Development of systems to minimize instructional disruptions
• Continued advocacy for faster access to the computer-based GED
• A new Learning Lab Captain at RNDC making a direct impact on the school’s daily production.
This annual graduation ceremony serves as a reminder of the transformative power of education and the commitment of NYC Correction and NYC Public Schools to fostering personal growth, opportunity, and second chances.
