NYC Department of Correction Fraternal Organization Volunteers to
Help Bahamas Hurricane Victims
Disaster Relief Association, comprised of DOC Correction Officers and non-uniformed personnel, spends several days rebuilding homes, clearing rubble in wake of Hurricane Dorian
December 20, 2019 – The Disaster Relief Association, a fraternal organization comprised of NYC Department of Correction officers and non-uniformed personnel, lent a helping hand to people in the Bahamas still struggling in the wake of Hurricane Dorian, which devastated the islands in September. A group of volunteers spent close to a week during this year’s holiday season rebuilding the interiors and roofs of homes damaged by the Category 5 hurricane, as well as clearing away debris and rubble. The team visited Nassau, Marsh Harbour and Abaco.
About the New York City Department of Correction
The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) provides for the care, custody, and control of persons accused of crimes or convicted and sentenced to one year or less of jail time. The Department manages 11 detainee facilities, 8 of which are located on Rikers Island. In addition, the Department operates two hospital Prison Wards (Bellevue and Elmhurst hospitals) and court holding facilities in each borough. During Fiscal Year 2019, the Department handled over 39,000 admissions and managed an average daily detainee population of approximately 7,900 individuals.
