DDC Panelist Share their insight at Robert F. Wagner Secondary School-Wide Career Day Event!
On February 15th, Five DDC panelists spoke to over 660 middle school and high school students about careers in the Architectural, Engineering and Construction Management (AEC) fields. The Robert F. Wagner Secondary School for Arts and Technology hosted its annual School Wide Career Day, bringing local professionals from a variety of careers and disciplines for candid conversations about their inspirations and the varied paths they’ve taken to get to where they are today. Panelist rotated within several classrooms. Noah Kaufman from Public Buildings, a longtime volunteer at R.F. Wagner, set forth the platform for students to consider their passion and provide a venue to introduce high school students to the many opportunities available on the road to success.
Olivia Kalban, Jr. Project manager in Public Buildings described a typical day working on a theater, cultural institution, or city park. “There are typically 8 hour days, as well as days you get overtime pay to ensure the project gets completed.” One inquisitive female student asked “was your family supportive of your decision to become an engineer?” Kalban replied, “despite having architects in my family, they were extremely supportive of my decision to become an engineer.”
Rocket Osborne, Jr. Project Manager in Public Buildings, was asked “Does your job allow you frequently travel Internationally?” Osborne stressed the importance of taking advantage of time and experiencing the local culture of some of the amazing cities projects are in, he stated, “right now, I’m in New York City, but I do hope to travel abroad in the future.”
Danielle Zender, Jr. Project Manager in Public buildings explained the role that math and science classes played in her career path. “It’s amazing, I was in their shoes not that long ago and here I am able to share my experiences with them.”
Rodolfo Leyton, Project Manager in Public Buildings explained his career path and long history working on some of New York City’s most iconic parks and landmark projects. He explained some of the critical work and safeguards put into place to ensure protected areas and landmarks are preserved.
