The Affordable Real Estate for Artists Initiative (AREA)

To ensure that artists continue to thrive and work in New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced in his 2015 State of the City Address a commitment to create 1,500 units of affordable housing for artists and 500 units of artist workspace over a period of ten years. This initiative, now known as Affordable Real Estate for Artists (AREA), is led by an inter-agency taskforce comprising of representatives from the Mayor’s Office, the Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA), NYC Economic Development Corporation (EDC), and the Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD), who are working together to implement the mayoral commitment.

About This Survey

The purpose of this survey is for informational use only; it is designed to help DCLA research and understand space needs and opportunities across NYC from organizations that currently wish to rent space for cultural use or to offer available space for rent. Any arts and cultural organizations incorporated as a nonprofit in New York State and located and operating in any of the five boroughs of New York City is eligible to respond.

Response to the survey is entirely voluntary and may be submitted any time. Responses will be reviewed by DCLA on a quarterly basis. Should your space needs or availabilities change, you may re-submit your response at any time.

This survey is being distributed simultaneously with a Request for Expressions of Interest (“RFEI”) that seek respondents with the organizational capacity, experience, and interest in developing and/or operating artist workspaces.
