Modernized design features a new Centre Street entrance to welcome visitors and New Yorkers
CityStore introduces its brand-new mascot: Muni the Pigeon
New York, NY – Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) Commissioner Louis A. Molina joined Deputy Mayor for Intergovernmental Affairs Tiffany Raspberry, City Council Members Gale Brewer and Amanda Farias, and DCAS staff to cut the ribbon and celebrate the grand reopening of the newly remodeled CityStore. The store has been modernized and brightened with a fresh, open design. The in-house renovation also boasts a new dedicated entrance directly from Centre Street, welcoming foot traffic and making the store more accessible and inviting for both locals and visitors alike. Located at the David N. Dinkins Municipal Building at 1 Centre Street in lower Manhattan — for nearly three decades — the CityStore has been the official retail store of the City of New York.
“1 Centre Street has always been a place where city business gets done, but now, with the remodel of the CityStore, it’s also a place where the public can connect with what makes this city so iconic,” said DCAS Commissioner Louis A. Molina. “By opening the doors on Centre Street, we’re increasing visibility and accessibility for this treasured city resource. The CityStore has been modernized to reflect the evolution of our amazing city, and we invite you all to shop the essence of NYC.”
“The CityStore has always been more than just a shop, it reflects the heart and hustle of New York City,” said Deputy Mayor of Intergovernmental Affairs Tiffany Raspberry. “With this beautiful remodel, the store is stocked full of iconic city staples and ready to offer a little piece of New York City to all those who walk through its brand-new doors.”
Operated by DCAS, the CityStore offers a curated selection of NYC-themed merchandise — from branded apparel and iconic memorabilia to gifts that celebrate the city's unique character. Every purchase supports city programs and promotes civic pride.
As part of the relaunch, CityStore also introduced its first-ever official mascot: Muni the Pigeon; a bold, scrappy, and endearing character who symbolizes the resilience, pride, and everyday brilliance of New York City’s workforce. Pigeons are synonymous with life in the five boroughs — ever-present, adaptive, and iconically New York.
“We are thrilled to open the doors to our new CityStore and welcome in our loyal customers: City employees, New Yorkers, and visitors from around the world. Whether it's a tote bag with the NYC staple bacon, egg, and cheese, a parking ticket-inspired mug, or an FDNY-branded doggy overcoat — every item on our shelves tells a story about the city we all love,” said CityStore Director Clara Ronk. “To help tell that story, we’re also excited to introduce Muni the Pigeon, our official store mascot. Muni represents the thousands of city employees who, like him, fan their feathers every day in support of the public good.”
"I love the City Store," said Council Member Gale A. Brewer. "The newly renovated space is even more welcoming, giving New Yorkers and visitors the opportunity to take home the vibrant energy and heart that makes our city unlike any other.”
“As Chair of the Economic Development Committee, I’m proud to see DCAS breathing new life into CityStore. This re-opening makes the NYC we know and love open to a wider audience of New Yorkers and visitors alike. This is a great way to celebrate the people, agencies, and neighborhoods that make our city incomparable. Moments like this stand as a model for how we can uplift New York City while supporting the diverse creators, makers, and small businesses that keep our local economy thriving," said Majority Leader Amanda Farías.
In addition to the flagship store at 1 Centre Street, CityStore continues to serve customers online at: nyc.gov/citystore, with an expanded digital experience that mirrors the energy and modern feel of the physical space. The site was recently redesigned for ease of access and stocked with a bevy of newly available merchandise. From an FDNY doggy-overcoat and a DSNY motorized garbage truck toy for kids, to a Central Park tea towel and a Brooklyn-inspired embroidered pillow crafted by a local artist, the new CityStore has a wide variety of city memorabilia and is the premiere location for authentic New York City merch.
For those visiting the City Clerk’s Marriage Bureau, CityStore also maintains a charming outpost at 141 Worth Street, open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. The location features merchandise that celebrates love, marriage, and partnership — a perfect memento for newlyweds or couples tying the knot at the bureau.
The first New York City CityStore — originally known as CityBooks — opened in December 1981 at 61 Chambers Street and was a small store that primarily sold copies of the Green Book and a few select souvenirs. In 1996, renovations to the building caused the store to relocate to the David N. Dinkins Municipal Building, where the physical store has resided since. Between 1997 and 1998, CityBooks was rebranded to CityStore in an effort to expand beyond book sales and grow the city’s goodwill with visitors and New Yorkers.About the NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services
