Source of Income Discrimination

What is source of income discrimination? Source of income discrimination often presents itself when individuals attempt to pay for their housing/rent with monies other than those earned from a paycheck or wages. Landlords in NYC can not discriminate against an individual who pays for their housing with social security, federal, state or local public assistance, housing vouchers, or another form of government assistance child. It is unlawful for a housing provider to refuese to accept a lawful source of income.

What is Fair Housing? The New York City Human Rights Law includes strong protections against discrimination in housing. The Commission works to educate New Yorkers about their rights to fair housing, ensure access, and works with the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development on annual forums and Tenant Resource Fairs.

In addition to regular trainings and community events, our Project Equal Access works with community members to ensure their buildings are accessible for people with disabilities. We partner with other City agencies, including the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), and local nonprofits on other programs to raise awareness and educate residents about their rights.
