Winner of urbanSHED
Competition Announced |

On Thursday, January 21, Mayor
Michael R. Bloomberg, Buildings
Commissioner Robert LiMandri and
American Institute of Architects
New York Chapter President Anthony
Schirripa,AIA,
unveiled the winner of the
urbanSHED International Design
Competition. The
competition challenged the global
design community to create a new
standard of sidewalk shed. The
winning design was selected from 164
submissions entered by architects,
engineers, designers and students
from 28 countries around the world.
The competition winner, "Urban
Umbrella," was developed by
Young-Hwan Choi, a 28-year-old
student from the University of
Pennsylvania with assistance from Sarrah Khan,
P.E., and Andres Cortes, R.A., of
the New York-based design firm
Agencie Group. Agencie Group
provided technical expertise in the
second stage of the competition that
helped advance Choi's design. View

built at a job site in Lower
Manhattan this summer.
Urban Umbrella will be on display in the
Helfand Gallery at the Center for Architecture at 536 LaGuardia Place in Manhattan through February
10, 2010. The competition was sponsored
by DOB, AIANY, Alliance for Downtown
New York, ABNY Foundation, IESNYC
and New York Building Congress with
additional support from DOT, DCP and
SEAoNY.
New Regulations for Standpipes &

go into effect
this year. Building owners

with these new

went into

Following the tragic fatal
fire at 130 Liberty Street
in August 2007,
Mayor Bloomberg
appointed Deputy Mayor
Edward Skyler to lead a
multi-agency working group to
develop ways to
improve safety and oversight
at construction, demolition and abatement
sites. These new laws
were part of the

recommendations generated by
the working group. |

documents.
The Department

the Rules of the

York. The hearing will

Student Apartments |
March 1 |
On March 1, the
Department will
hold a public
hearing on a proposed rule relating to classifications of student apartments. The Department proposes to add Chapter 300 and section 310-01 to Title 1 of
the Official
Compilation of
the Rules of the
City of New
York. The hearing will
be held at 10:00am in the 6th Floor
Training Room at
Department
headquarters at
280 Broadway in
Manhattan.
NFPA 14 Amendment |
March 10 |
On
March 10, the Department will
hold a public
hearing on a
proposed rule relating to
National Fire
Protection
Association 14
Amendment. The Department
of Buildings
proposes to add
section 3616-03
to Subchapter Q
of chapter 3600
of Title 1 of
the Rules of the
City of New
York. The hearing will
be held at 10:00
am in the 6th
Floor Training
Room at
Department

SEAoNY Seminar
February 10, 2010

On Wednesday, February 10, 2010, Department
experts will participate in a seminar
hosted by the Structural Engineers |
Association of New York (SEAoNY). Topics covered at the seminar will include: concrete testing and
inspections, masonry buildings, building
research, demolition requirements and an
overview of Departmental changes in
2009.
The seminar will be held at the New York
Academy of Sciences at 250 Greenwich
Street in Manhattan. It will run
from 8:00am to 2:00pm.
Registration is required and can be done
