CITY ANNOUNCES NEW PROGRAM TO PREPARE UNDERREPRESENTED NEW YORKERS FOR IN-DEMAND DATA ANALYST CAREERS

New Training Program Aims to Ensure All New Yorker Can Access Careers in the City’s Growing Tech Industry

New York – NYC Department of Small Business Services (SBS) Commissioner Gregg Bishop today announced a new program to prepare New Yorkers with limited tech experience for in-demand data analyst jobs. The program, called the Data Analyst Training Accelerator (DATA), is part of the NYC Tech Talent Pipeline (TTP) initiative managed by SBS. DATA aims to provide an accessible pathway to data analyst careers for underrepresented New Yorkers, including those who are seeking an alternative to a four-year degree.

This training initiative was designed in partnership with leading New York City-based tech companies to build a qualified, local talent pool to fill in-demand tech jobs. According to Burning Glass Technologies, over the past five years, demand for data analysts in New York City has grown by 50%, and demand for data analysts early in their careers, with 0-2 years of experience, has increased by 112%.

“The City continues to ensure New Yorkers have pathways to access careers in our city’s growing tech ecosystem, which offers over 320,000 jobs across the five boroughs,” said Gregg Bishop, Commissioner of the NYC Department of Small Business Services. “The Data Analyst Training Accelerator program will help underrepresented and low-income New Yorkers access lucrative careers in a growing industry.”

DATA is made possible through over $800,000 in funding from the City and a partnership with Galvanize, who will serve as the training provider. Students will be trained within Galvanize’s unique technology ecosystem and will graduate with in-demand skills in advanced Excel, SQL, Python, and digital marketing-related analytics, as well as career advancement and interview skills. The following nine industry professionals provided their insights to ensure the program’s curriculum is aligned to relevant skills:

  • Alexandra Pappas, Software Engineer, Etsy
  • Brian London, Senior Lead Data Scientist, Seatgeek
  • Cullen O’Neill, Director of Business Intelligence, Vimeo
  • Liz Walton, Vice President of Marketing, Yext
  • Nate Christian, Director of Marketing Analytics and Affiliate Marketing, Vimeo
  • Rita Ku, Chief Intelligence Officer, Rauxa
  • Shelby Ahern, Director of Email Marketing, SmartAsset
  • Talgat Mussin, Measurement Lead, Google
  • Vishwa Bhuta, Data Scientist (Analytics), Etsy

“We are excited to partner with SBS and New York City on this partnership to fulfill a current need that will only grow in New York,” said Harsh Patel, CEO, Galvanize. “Galvanize is dedicated to closing the skills gap that exists in technology today, and we’re thrilled that the City of New York not only recognizes this need as well, but has dedicated resources toward equipping New Yorkers with the tools they need to participate in the city’s growing technology economy today and in the future.”

“I believe the Data Analyst Training Accelerator (DATA) program will not only uplift underrepresented individuals, but also provide alternatives for those who may not necessarily thrive in a conventional education system,” said Council Member Mark Gjonaj, Small Business Committee Chair. “This is a great opportunity, particularly during this technological era. I am eager to see the talent that unfolds from this program.”
