Hellenic Society

Hellenic Society

The New York City Department of Correction Hellenic Society was formed back in March of 1998 and led by their first president, Thomas Tsotsoros (now retired warden). The society was formed as a non profit organization to represent the Greek nationality along with all Mediterranean within the department. The Hellenic Society not only represents Greeks within the department, but also the community surrounding Rikers Island since the neighborhood entering Rikers is predominately Greek. Their mission is to promote awareness of DOC and its benefits to the Greek community and promote recruitment of more Greeks to the department. The society hold dinner dances and raise scholarship funds for children of our membership. They volunteer during holiday seasons to donate toys to children, represent DOC by marching every year in the Greek Independence Day parade and support all fellow fraternal organizations within DOC and outside  fraternities  such as NYPD, FDNY and other municipal organizations.
