Other Fair Housing Laws

This website focuses primarily on the New York City Human Rights Law, unless otherwise noted, which only applies in New York City and which the New York City Commission on Human Rights has the authority to enforce.

The federal Fair Housing Act and the New York State Human Rights Law also prohibit housing discrimination.

To learn more about the federal Fair Housing Act, visit the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development's website.

To learn more about the New York State Human Rights Law, visit the New York State Human Rights Commission's website.

Note that you cannot file a complaint with the New York City Commission on Human Rights if you have already filed a discrimination complaint with any other court or agency, including the New York State Division of Human Rights, the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, or any state or federal court.
