NYC Department of Correction Commissioner Joseph Ponte said:
“With the recent release of shocking video footage of Correction Officer Alastasia Bryan’s fatal attack, we implore anyone who may recognize the assailant in the video to contact the NYPD immediately. This has been a most difficult time throughout the Department as we continue to mourn the loss of our fallen officer. Despite our grief, we are working very closely with the NYPD and following any leads that could help identify and find Officer Bryan’s killer and bring them to justice.”

The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) provides for the care, custody, and control of persons accused of crimes or convicted and sentenced to one year or less of jail time. The Department manages 12 person in custody facilities, 9 of which are located on Rikers Island. In addition, the Department operates two hospital Prison Wards (Bellevue and Elmhurst hospitals) and court holding facilities in each borough. During Fiscal Year 2016, the Department handled over 63,000 admissions and managed an average daily person in custody population of approximately 9,790 individuals.
