The Administrative Prosecution Unit (APU)

In most serious cases, instead of merely recommending discipline, the CCRB prosecutes members of the NYPD in front of the Deputy Commissioner of Trials at 1 Police Plaza. These trials are open to the public. Penalties for officers found guilty range from warning and admonishment, loss of vacation days, suspension without pay, dismissal probation, or termination from the NYPD. The Police Commissioner remains the final arbiter of discipline but is required to give written explanations when their determinations deviate from the CCRB's recommendations.

Since the agreement came into effect, the APU has closed more than 400 cases and has tried more than 250 members of the NYPD.
