1.    Ackerman Institute for the Family, Gender, & Family Project
The Gender & Family Project (GFP) empowers youth, families and communities by providing gender affirmative services, training and research. GFP promotes gender inclusivity as a form of social justice in all the systems involved in the life of the family. They have support groups for caregivers, grandparents, siblings and family members, and adolescents, as well as play groups, Spanish-speaking groups, family therapy and parental coaching, and affirmative psychological and gender evaluations.

2.    SAGE
SAGE is the country's largest and oldest organization dedicated to improving the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) older adults. Founded in 1978 and headquartered in New York City, SAGE is a national organization that offers supportive services and consumer resources to LGBT older adults and their caregivers.  Every year they hold SageTable, an event promoting conversation between LGBT people and allies of different generations.

3.    LGBT Network
The LGBT Network is an association of non-profit organizations working to serve the LGBT community of Long Island and Queens:

  • Services and Advocacy for LGBT Elders – Long Island (SAGE-LI)

Together the Network operates Long Island’s four LGBT community centers, providing safe spaces and life-changing resources for the tens of thousands of LGBT and ally individuals who pass through the doors each year.  Each center also hosts a variety of special events.

4.    Destination Tomorrow
Destination Tomorrow is a grassroots agency located in the South Bronx that provides services to and for the LGBTQ community.  They have comprehensive programs and services both in house and referral based, in addition to capacity building programs to agencies who wish to work with LGBTQ communities but lack the cultural competency and expertise.  Their Community Services include an LGBT Youth Drop-in Center, Counselling and Case Management services for mental health, employment assistance, and counselling, and a comprehensive transgender healthcare program in partnership with the Montefiore Medical Center.

5.    Tyler Clementi Foundation
The Tyler Clementi Foundation is an organization created by the Clementi family which seeks to prevent bullying through inclusion, assertion of dignity, and acceptance to honor the memory of Tyler Clementi.  Today the foundation continues to carry the important message about the suicide risk facing many LGBT youth, in addition to their work standing up to bullying across all cultures and identities.  Through platforms such as #day1, which provides free customized toolkits, the foundation encourages leadership in creating safe spaces where individuals are able to stand up to bullying and embrace diversity.

6.    PFLAG NYC
Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender People NYC is a partnership of parents, allies, and LGBT people working to make a better future for LGBT youth and adults. PFLAG NYC provides services to NYC families, schools, corporations, and the larger community to increase understanding and acceptance of LGBT people.

7.    CAMBA’s Project ALY (Accept LGBT Youth)
CAMBA’s Project Accept LGBT Youth (Project ALY) promotes acceptance from parents and family members of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) youth.
Their goal is to promote parental/familial acceptance of LGBT youth, through:
  • Teen health and wellness workshops for parents, families, and community members
  • Staff development regarding LGBT cultural competency
  • Monthly groups for parents/family members of LGBT youth.
Parents, families, caregivers, and allies of LGBT youth who live in Brooklyn are eligible to participate in programming

8.    Hetrick-Martin Institute
Since its founding, Hetrick-Martin Institute has grown from a small, volunteer-led grass-roots advocacy organization into a leading professional provider of social support and programming for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or questioning (LGBTQ) youth.
Through a comprehensive package of direct services and referrals, Hetrick-Martin seeks to foster healthy youth development. Hetrick-Martin’s staff promotes excellence in the delivery of youth services and uses its expertise to create innovative programs that other organizations may use as models.

1.   Brooklyn Community Pride Center
The Brooklyn Community Pride Center provides services and support to the borough’s LGBT+ community through original programming and partnerships with exemplary organizations.  They offer arts and culture programming, HIV prevention projects, support groups for trans and gender nonconforming individuals, and other programming for the LGBT+ community of Brooklyn.

2.   The Center
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center is the heart and home of NYC’s LGBT community, providing programs for health, wellness and community connection.
The Center has supported thousands of LGBT families over the years. Their programs are designed to help LGBT families establish healthy relationships and community connections, and to provide information and support to help you reach your social, emotional and financial goals.

The LGBTQ Institute for Family Therapy (LIFT) Certification Program
LIFT is a ground-breaking, six-month certification program for Licensed Master Social Workers (LMSW) and Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW) who provide therapeutic services to families involved with New York City’s Administration for Children’s Services (ACS).

1.    Lambda Legal
Lambda Legal is the oldest and largest national legal organization whose mission is to achieve full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and everyone living with HIV through impact litigation, education and public policy work.
As a 501©3 nonprofit organization, they do not charge their clients for legal representation or advocacy, and receive no government funding.

2.    Anti-Violence Project
AVP empowers lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and HIV-affected communities and allies to end all forms of violence through organizing and education, and supports survivors through counseling and advocacy.  They offer client services including crisis intervention and short-term counseling, legal services in Family Court, Housing Court, Civil Court and with immigration matters, and economic empowerment programs.

2.    New York City Department of Education Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Student Guidelines
It is the policy of the New York City Department of Education to maintain a safe and supportive school environment for all students free from harassment, intimidation, and/or bullying and free from discrimination because of actual or perceived race, color, creed, ethnicity, national origin, citizenship/immigration status, religion, gender, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, disability, or weight. The Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Student Guidelines* are part of this commitment.

1.    IHI Therapy Center
IHI is a NYC-based non-profit psychotherapy and training center dedicated to fostering personal growth free of traditional gender, sexual orientation, and cultural biases.  They have been providing LGBTQ affirmative therapy for over 40 years. To accommodate clients from all walks of life, IHI offers a sliding scale based on annual income, with some additionally discounted programs.

2.   Metropolitan Hospital’s Comprehensive LGBT Health Center
Metropolitan Hospital's Comprehensive LGBT Health Center is designed to focus on the health needs and disparities specific to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.  They provide individual and family based care in the following areas: Transgender Health Services,
Men's & Women's Health, HIV/STD Screening and Treatment, PrEP, Specialty Referral Services, Social Work Services, and all other General Medical Services. Staff is available M-F 9-5 to schedule appointments and answer questions.

3.    Q Clinic
Q Clinic is a free clinic that operates out of Metropolitan Community Church of New York at 446 W 36th Street. They welcome all patients, especially those who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and/or part of the queer community.  Clinic is held on Wednesday evenings and accepts walk-in and appointment patients from 6pm-7:30pm. No ID is necessary to be seen.  They currently provide: primary care services, physical exams, STI/HIV lab screenings, health management, subsidized medications, PrEP, and flu shots.

4.    Callen-Lorde Community Health Center
The Callen-Lorde Community Health Center provides sensitive, quality healthcare and related services targeted to New York’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities.  They offer primary care services, women’s health specialists, transgender health and wellness specialists, a full onsite pharmacy, community outreach and education programs, and conduct research, among other programs and services.  They also operate the Health Outreach to Teens (HOTT) program, offering welcoming, non-judgmental, confidential medical and mental health services specifically for LGBTQ adolescents and young adults ages 13-24.

NYC Community Based Organizations

1.    Jewish Queer Youth (JQY)
JQY is a nonprofit organization supporting and empowering LGBTQ youth in the Jewish community. JQY fights to ensure the emotional and physical health and safety of these individuals, with a special focus on teens and young adults from Orthodox, Chasidic, and Sephardic communities.

2.    Tarab NYC
Tarab NYC fosters an inclusive and safe community of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, and/or gender non-conforming Arab, Middle Eastern, and/or North African people in the greater New York City area. They work both within MENA (Middle Eastern and North African) communities to reduce stigma towards queer people and within queer communities to reduce stigma towards people of MENA descent.

3.    Muslim Alliance for Sexual and Gender Diversity
The Muslim Alliance for Sexual and Gender Diversity (MASGD) works to support, empower and connect LGBTQ Muslims.  They seek to challenge root causes of oppression, including misogyny and xenophobia.  They also aim to increase the acceptance of gender and sexual diversity within Muslim communities, and to promote a progressive understanding of Islam that is centered on inclusion, justice and equality.

4.    Caribbean Equality Project
Based in Queens, the Caribbean Equality Project empowers LGBTQ people of Caribbean descent and origin in New York City as well as the Caribbean region. Their mission is to promote social change, awareness, and acceptance by empowering and strengthening the voices of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people of Caribbean descent in the New York area. Their advocacy efforts are directed towards: cultivating community partnerships, greater family acceptance and creating a society based on respect, inclusion and equality, regardless of an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity within the Caribbean diaspora.

5.    API Rainbow Parents
API Rainbow Parents is a support group and part of PFLAG NYC.  They provide information and support to Asian-Pacific Islander (API) families with LGBT family members, with a special focus on meeting cultural and language needs.  The group is open to family members, friends, and LGBT people themselves.

Families with LGBTQ+ Parents

1.    Family Equality Council
Family Equality Council connects, supports, and represents the three million parents who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer in this country and their six million children. Their work changes attitudes and policies to ensure that all families are respected, loved, and celebrated – including families with parents who are LGBTQ.  They have a plethora of resources covering topics from how to talk to children about recent events to creating allies in religious communities.

2.    COLAGE
COLAGE unites people with LGBTQ parents and caregivers into a network of peers and supports them as they nurture and empower each other to be skilled, self-confident, and just leaders in their collective communities.
