April 23, 2008 - Governor David A. Paterson today announced that he will sign legislation this afternoon, which will dramatically expand the Empire State film production tax credit program and help attract even more movie and television industry business to New York. read more
October 29, 2007 - Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting (MOFTB) Commissioner Katherine Oliver today announced the release of a newly drafted permit rule proposal, which is available online and published in the City Record. Under the proposed rules, which are designed to codify procedures that have existed in practice since the office was established in 1966, a permit would be required for a shoot if production equipment or vehicles create an obstruction, but not for productions that only use hand-held cameras or tripods that don’t cause an obstruction.

On Tuesday, May 1st, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg unveiled a public awareness campaign featuring a series of print and broadcast advertisements designed to combat the creation, distribution, and sale of illegally recorded films in New York City. Featuring PSAs to run on TV and in movie theaters and several bus shelters advertisements, the campaign sends the message that movie piracy harms our economy, kills jobs and impacts all New Yorkers. The Mayor also signed legislation that strengthens the penalty for illegally videotaping a film from a violation to a misdemeanor with increased jail time.
