Finally Getting Sheds Down!

Mayor Adams and DOB Commissioner Oddo recently announced the City's new Get Sheds Down plan, an ambitious series of initiatives to overhaul the management of sidewalk sheds across New York City.

The new plan works to incentivize property owners to expedite building facade repairs so construction sheds on sidewalks don't linger for years on our streets.

The Mayor's plan also explores the creative possibilities for more attractive shed designs, and promotes alternative pedestrian protection measures for both private and public buildings, such as facade safety netting.

To gather more data on the sheds up in our City, DOB will be sending out an email in the next few days with a link to a mandatory survey for building owners and their contractors in DOB NOW. The survey will ask recipients to provide more detailed information about the purpose of their shed and the timeline for its removal.

Local Law 97 Emission Limit Adjustments

Buildings owners who are subject to mandatory carbon emission limits starting in 2024 under Local Law 97 of 2019, have another opportunity to request an emission limit adjustment, if they believe their building is subject to special circumstances or is a not-for profit hospital and healthcare facility.

Local law 77 of 2023 has reopened the submission window for property owners to file applications to request an adjustment to their calendar year 2024-2029 emission limits for these buildings. The new deadline to submit an emission adjustment is now January 1st, 2025.

Applications for adjustments must be submitted to the Department using DOB NOW: Safety.

Crane Collapse in Midtown Manhattan

On the morning of July 26th, DOB engineers and inspectors joined a multi-agency emergency response after a fire broke out on the machine deck of a tower crane 550 feet up in the air in Midtown Manhattan, which led to a major collapse of the crane's boom. Miraculously, no one was killed or seriously hurt in this major incident.

DOB crane inspectors have climbed to the fire-damaged machine deck on multiple occasions since the collapse, and have found the tower crane to be in stable conditions. DOB investigators have not found any evidence that the crane still poses a danger to public safety. In response to the major collapse, DOB launched a comprehensive investigation to find out exactly why the collapse occurred, and whether the incident could have potentially been prevented.

DOB would like to thank all the men and women from our agency partners that were involved in the emergency response.
