Statement from New York City Corporation Counsel Hinds-Radix Following U.S. Supreme Court Ruling in New York State Rifle & Pistol Assn., Inc. v. Bruen

June 23, 2022

"The Supreme Court ruled that New York State’s 'proper cause' requirement is unconstitutional, but the Court did not strike down the state’s ability to require an appropriate license to carry a handgun. Anyone illegally carrying a firearm in New York City will face the full consequences of the law. We note, too, that the Court remanded the case for further proceedings by the lower courts. We are still carefully reviewing this disappointing decision, but New Yorkers should be assured that the City will continue to do everything possible to mitigate the risks of this ruling and to keep them safe."
