Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs Joins Department of Consumer and Worker Protection to Host Workers' Rights Community and Ethnic Media Roundtable

August 22, 2022

New York – Today, Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA) Commissioner Manual Castro and the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) Commissioner Vilda Vera Mayuga hosted an in-person Community and Ethnic Media roundtable to discuss workers' rights and answer media questions regarding workplace laws, including paid safe and sick leave, Fair Workweek, and delivery worker's rights.

During the roundtable, two clients were able to share their experiences with DCWP services during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and throughout 2020. DCWP was able to get compensation for workers who had filed complaints on behalf of their employers. DCWP also ensured that employers were ordered to adopt and distribute compliant safe and sick leave policies and distribute and post the Notice of Employee Rights at their place of business. These efforts were made to guarantee that all current and future employees of these businesses are aware of their rights to safe and sick leave.

In New York City, workers have rights regardless of their immigration status. For additional resources available to NYC workers, visit Delivery Workers, Paid Safe and Sick Leave, What Employees Need to Know, Fair Workweek or call 311 and say "worker".
