NEW YORK CITY DISTRICTING COMMISSION TO VOTE ON RELEASE OF PRELIMINARY CITY COUNCIL MAPS FRIDAY, JULY 15th
WHO: The New York Districting Commission responsible for redrawing a new City Council plan.
WHAT: The New York Districting Commission votes to release preliminary maps for the 51 City Council districts.
WHERE: 22 Reade Street, first floor, NY, NY 10007
WHEN: Friday, July 15th, 11 a.m.
WHY: A new plan is drawn every ten years following the U.S. Census to bring the City into compliance with the Constitutional doctrine of one-person, one vote, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and the charter of the City of New York. The City’s population grew 8.2 million in 2010 to 8.8 million in 2020, according to the Census. To reflect this increase and bring the City inline with federal, state, and local laws the new plan raises the average number of residents per district from approximately 160,710 to 172,882.
