Mayor de Blasio, Speaker Mark-Viverito: Financial Crisis Could Soon Become a Humanitarian One
With the clock ticking on a potential congressional agreement, Mayor Bill de Blasio and Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito doubled down on their push for federal action to give Puerto Rico vital bankruptcy protection as it faces an unprecedented debt crisis.
Mayor de Blasio and Speaker Mark-Viverito released the following joint statement:
“When we talk about the debt crisis in Puerto Rico, we’re talking about the very livelihoods, health, and wellbeing of American citizens. There is simply no reason our fellow citizens in Puerto Rico shouldn’t be afforded the same protections available to all 50 states. New York City urges Congress to act swiftly before it’s too late and this very real fiscal crisis turns into a humanitarian one. We’re grateful to our congressional delegation – especially Congressmembers Velázquez and Serrano – for their strong leadership.”
