Weekly Update on Murders and Shootings in New York City

In 2012, New York City saw the lowest number of murders and the lowest number of shootings at any time since comparable records were kept, with 419 murders and 1,374 shootings. Below is a year-to-date update on murders and shootings in 2013. This update is provided every week by the Mayor’s Office.

Murders

Through Sunday, November 10th, New York City has seen 82 fewer murders than at this point last year: 287 murders in 2013 compared with 369 murders in 2012 – a decrease of 22.2 percent.

Murders committed with firearms represent 168 of the 287 murders in 2013, 58.5 percent.

Through Sunday, November 10th, the number of murders committed with firearms is down by 45 from last year: 168 in 2013 compared with 213 in 2012 – a decrease of 21.1 percent.

Shootings

Through Sunday, November 10th, New York City has seen 262 fewer total shootings than at this point last year: 964 shootings in 2013 compared with 1,226 shootings in 2012 – a decrease of 21.4 percent.
