Larry Mullins: In the wake of all of this, we want to bring in Mayor Eric Adams, who is monitoring developments throughout the city this afternoon. Mr. Mayor, thank you so much for joining us. Welcome to a very busy afternoon on 1010 WINS. Before we begin, be aware, if you haven't already been informed.
Governor Hochul just declared a state of emergency here for the city. With that in mind, sir, you've heard about the car submerged in places like the Clearview. What are you hearing, and are there any injuries to speak of so far?
Mayor Eric Adams: No unknown injuries at this time. And as was mentioned on 1010 WINS, we're dealing with a severe thunderstorm watch until eight p.m. and a flood watch until tomorrow morning. And so we want New Yorkers to know storms may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts up to 65 miles per hour, and hail up to one inch in diameter. And so we're doing our job of cleaning catch basins, as well as having our FDNY crews out, as well as our other first responders [that] are going to be out. And we need New Yorkers to do their part, [inaudible] as well.
Mullins: Yeah, on that note, from an emergency management standpoint, any concerns you have specifically about places deemed more vulnerable than others, including the subways?
Mayor Adams: Yes, as you stated, the subways. You know, subways are below [ground], so there's always the possibility of flooding. And we're in the middle of the rush hour, drive-out time.
And so we're asking New Yorkers, please, if you could leave early, do so. And if you see flooding conditions, don't enter the subway system. And please NotifyNYC is a way to stay on top of what's happening.
Mullins: Okay. And I know it's been fresh on your mind, as it has been on our newscast. That is, the power outage is on West 4th today. Second time this week. How problematic is that in the wake of all of this weather that's going on right now? And what are we hearing about a permanent fix over there? This is the second time this week.
Mayor Adams: Yes, this heat, not only heat, is one of the most deadly weather-related conditions that can impact New Yorkers, but it also plays a major impact on our infrastructure. And it causes power outages and other issues that you will face during this time. It's extremely significant. We ask for all New Yorkers to stay patient, as our Con-Ed crews and others go about repairing the problem.
Mullins: Okay, finally, for the morning commute, because this rain is going to continue, any advice you have for New Yorkers in dealing with this storm system, sir?
Mayor Adams: Yes, NotifyNYC. Stay abreast of stations like yours. 1010 is always keeping New Yorkers up to date, but there's a wealth of information on NotifyNYC. And we've also encouraged people of our new use of [the] Citizen app. Citizen app is keeping New Yorkers up to date as well. And so any form of information can provide a greater commute.
Mullins: Okay, Mayor Eric Adams, thanks for stopping in with us, sir. We appreciate your time.
Mayor Adams: Thank you.
