Transcript: Mayor Adams Appears on Telemundo 47

Alejandro Mendoza: Se cumple en dos años del estallido de la crisis migratoria en Nueva York, que obligó a la ciudad a hacer un llamado desesperado de ayuda al gobierno federal.

Translation: It will be two years since the outbreak of the immigration crisis in New York, which forced the city to make a desperate call for help from the federal government.

Darling Burdiez: ¿Pero qué ha pasado desde entonces y cómo las autoridades se enfrentan a los nuevos retos? Como es el caso de la presencia del Tren de Aragua, esa temida organización criminal venezolana. En exclusiva, Yolanda Vásquez habló con el alcalde, Eric Adams, y esto fue lo que le contó sobre el tema.

Translation: But what has happened since then and how do the authorities face the new challenges such as the presence of Tren de Aragua (Aragua Train), the feared Venezuelan criminal organization. Yolanda Vásquez spoke exclusively with the mayor, Eric Adams, and this is what he said.

Yolanda Vásquez: A comienzo de abril del 2022, la ciudad de Nueva York empezó a recibir a miles de migrantes que cruzaban la frontera en busca de asilo y que las autoridades de Texas ponían en buses y despachaban hacia la Gran Manzana. Los primeros meses eran recibidos por el mismo Alcalde Adams, el comisionado de asuntos de inmigrantes y organizaciones que los ayudaban a ubicarse. Pero fue el 19 de julio del mismo año cuando por primera vez, el alcalde denunció públicamente el envío de esos autobuses por parte del gobernador de Texas y pidió ayuda al gobierno federal porque los migrantes no paraban de llegar y le estaban costando una gran cantidad de dinero a la ciudad.

Translation: At the beginning of April 2022, New York City began to receive thousands of migrants who crossed the border in search of asylum and who were put on buses by Texas authorities and sent to the Big Apple. In the first months, they were received by Mayor Adams himself, the commissioner of Immigration Affairs, and organizations that helped them locate. But it was July 19th of that same year when, for the first time, the mayor publicly denounced the arrival of those buses sent by the Texas governor, and asked for help from the federal government because the migrants kept arriving and were costing him a lot of money to the city.

Mayor Adams: Gastamos alrededor de cinco mil millones de dólares para atender a los migrantes y solicitantes de asilo y los líderes nacionales han viajado aquí a la ciudad para ver lo que estamos haciendo. 

Translation: We spent about $5 billion to care for the migrants and the asylum seekers and national leaders have traveled here to the city to see what we are doing.

Vásquez: Y en nuestra entrevista exclusiva con Adams, el mandatario reconoció que en estos dos años han hecho mucho, pero también que necesitan más ayuda.

Translation: And in our exclusive interview with Adams, he acknowledged that in these two years they have done a lot, but also that they need more help.

Mayor Adams: Recibimos alrededor de 138 millones de dólares del gobierno federal, pero no nos estamos acercando a lo que deberíamos recibir. Esto debería ser pagado por el gobierno nacional porque es una crisis nacional y un gobierno nacional debería asumir los costos. 

Translation: We received about $138 million from the federal government, so we are not getting anywhere near what we should receive. This should be paid for by the national government. This is a national crisis and a national government should pick up the costs.

Vásquez: Y es que las estadísticas oficiales muestran que la población de migrantes que han llegado en los dos últimos años es gigantesca. Para que tengan una idea, las últimas cifras indican que hay 207 mil 400 migrantes registrados en la ciudad de Nueva York desde el 2022. La primera semana de julio llegaron 900. Hay 64 mil 900 aún en refugios de la ciudad y existen 215 centros de emergencia en toda la ciudad. Pero por encima de la preocupación por el costo económico de la gran cantidad de migrantes, el alcalde asegura que ahora esta crisis tiene un nuevo matiz que es más alarmante.

Translation: And official statistics show that the population of migrants who have arrived in the last two years is gigantic. To give you an idea, the latest figures indicate that there are 207,400 migrants that have registered in New York City since 2022. 900 arrived in the first week of July. There are 64,900 still in shelters in the city and there are 215 emergency centers throughout the city. But above the concern about the economic costs of the large number of migrants, the mayor says that this crisis now has a new twist that is more alarming. 

Señor alcalde, las autoridades de la ciudad de Nueva York ya han dicho que hay presencia de miembros del Tren de Aragua en la ciudad. ¿Qué está haciendo la ciudad y qué está haciendo el gobierno federal para evitar que estos miembros continúen llegando a este lugar?

Translation: Mr. Mayor, New York City authorities have already said that there are members of the Tren de Aragua (Aragua Train members) in the city. What is the city doing and what is the federal government doing to prevent these members from continuing to come?

Mayor Adams: Bueno, esta información de la presencia de esta banda llegó tras algunas detenciones y envié al comisionado de inteligencia y a mi primer subcomisionado a Colombia para que conocieran más sobre esta pandilla y trajeron información preocupante que se trata de una pandilla muy peligrosa y que debemos asegurarnos de que no se establezcan aquí en nuestra ciudad.

Creemos que participan en comportamientos ilegales y que esa es la fuente de tantos aumentos de robos y robos sistemáticos, especialmente en escúters. Y seguimos monitoreando la situación, pero es alarmante.

Translation: Well, this information about the presence of this gang came after a few arrests and I sent the commissioner of Intelligence and my first deputy commissioner to Colombia to learn more about this gang, and they brought back some troubling intelligence that this is a very dangerous gang and we must make sure that they don’t take a foothold here in our city. We believe they are participating in illegal behavior, and they’re the source of some of the increases in robberies and pattern robberies, particularly on scooters. And we continue to monitor the situation, but it is alarming.

Vásquez: Y para asegurarse que cortará el problema desde la raíz, el alcalde nombró a un nuevo embajador de la Policía de Nueva York en Colombia con una misión muy puntual.

Translation: And to ensure that he will cut the problem at the root, the mayor appointed a new ambassador from the New York City Police Department in Colombia with a very specific mission.

Mayor Adams: Estamos muy agradecidos con las autoridades colombianas por hacer esta asociación para permitir que un oficial de inteligencia vaya a Colombia y sea asignado allí para que podamos obtener información temprana de lo que está sucediendo, cuántos migrantes están avanzando a Nueva York y cualquier forma de comportamiento criminal que pueda estar saliendo, ya sea de Venezuela o de cualquier otro país de la región.

Translation: We are so thankful to the Colombian authorities for doing this partnership to allowing an intelligence officer to go to Colombia and be assigned there so that we can get early information of what’s taking place, how many migrants and asylum seekers are making their way to New York and any form of criminal behavior that may be coming out of either Venezuela or any other country in the region.
