Arthur Chi’en: Well, tens of thousands of New Yorkers poured into the streets yesterday as part of No Kings rallies that were held across the country, with no major disruptions or clashes with police here. Mayor Adams is touting the city's handling of the demonstrations. Fox 5's Meredith Gorman has more.
Meredith Gorman: Thousands of people marched down Fifth Avenue on Saturday at the No Kings protest in Manhattan, while similar protests were also being held at other spots around the city and nationwide.
Here, Mayor Eric Adams says he's pleased with the way New Yorkers took to the streets, largely peacefully, and is also happy with the way that NYPD kept protesters safe leading up to and at the protests.
Mayor Adams: 50,000 people were on our streets. Only 14 arrests, no injuries or serious injuries to members of service, and no serious injuries to the protesters. That is the way a democracy works.
Gorman: As for how the NYPD maintains a safe environment during the protests, Adams says it's been a combination of technology and on-the-ground training of police officers that has made all the difference.
Mayor Adams: During the Floyd protests, we didn't have the use of drones. We used drones during this protest, and it really allowed us to see what was happening across the city, and instead of policing from the ground level only, we were also able to police from the sky. I cannot tell you how much of a benefit that is.
Gorman: And Saturday's No Kings protest in Midtown Manhattan, which was largely peaceful, was in line with how Adams has encouraged people to protest, non-violently. Protesters say they came out for a number of different causes, but all in opposition of President Donald Trump's policies.
