Remarks by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws
“The next bill before me is Introductory Number 1035-A, sponsored by Council Members Williams, Fidler, Comrie, Gennaro, Gentile, Greenfield, King, Koo, Lander, Palma, Rose, Arroyo, Barron, Jackson, Mark-Viverito, Weprin and Wills.
“As gaming cafes become increasingly popular, we have observed an emerging phenomenon of these establishments engaging in and promoting unlawful gambling, often offering cash prizes. This legislation requires the Department of Consumer Affairs to revoke the license of a gaming café or amusement arcade if the operator is found to have violated the law regarding unlawful gambling. Having strict consequences in place will keep New York City ahead of the curve in enforcement and send a strong message that unlawful gambling will not be tolerated.
“I would like to thank Department of Consumer Affairs Commissioner Jonathan Mintz, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly and their staff for their work on this bill along with my Office of City Legislative Affairs. I would also like to thank the City Council for approving this legislation.”
