Mayor Bloomberg Signs Legislation Requiring Safety Information On Motor Coaches Be Available Online

June 6, 2013

Remarks by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws

“The first of four bills before me today is Introductory Number 591-A, sponsored by Council Members Chin, Vacca, Brewer, Cabrera, Dromm, Fidler, Gentile, James, Koppell, Koslowitz, Lander, Mendez, Rose, Van Bramer, Williams, Nelson, Koo, Eugene, Gennaro, Arroyo, Greenfield, Barron, Jackson, Mealy, Wills and Ulrich.

“As motor coach carriers become an increasingly common mode of travel, it is important that passengers have the ability to access safety information about them.  This legislation will require the Department of Transportation to place a link on its web site to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s web site, along with a description of the safety information available on that web site.  The ability to easily locate this important information will ensure that passengers can make informed decisions before choosing a carrier for travel.

“I would like to thank Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan and her staff for their work on this bill along with my Office of City Legislative Affairs.  I would also like to thank the City Council for approving this legislation.”
