MAYOR GIULIANI PROCLAIMS WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH IN NEW YORK CITY
Honors Women in the City's Uniformed Services at City Hall Ceremony
Today, Mayor Rudolph Giuliani proclaimed the month of March as Women's History
Month in New York City, and honored the contributions of women in the City's uniformed
services.
"Once prevented from serving and protecting their fellow New Yorkers as
men have always been free to do, women now wear New York City's uniform with
pride--and distinction," Mayor Giuliani said. "Today's award recipients--women
of the Police Department, the Fire
Department, the Department of Correction,
the Department of Environmental Protection,
the Department of Sanitation, the Department
of Investigation, and the Office of the Sheriff --have excelled in their
jobs, and proven that neither sex has a monopoly on talent, skill, or good character."
The Mayor was joined by Amalia Betanzos, Chairperson of the Commission on the
Status of Women; Deputy Mayor Rudy Washington; NYPD Commissioner Bernard Kerik;
FDNY Commissioner Thomas Von Essen; Department of Correction Commissioner William
Fraser; Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Joel Miele; Department
of Sanitation Commissioner Kevin Farrell; Department of Investigation Commissioner
Edward Kuriansky; Acting Sheriff Henry Coira; and members of the NYPD's Color
Guard. Police officer Annmarie Moloney sang the national anthem.
Recognizing women whose job performance extended above and beyond their duties
to serve and protect New Yorkers, this year's ceremony honored:
- Elizabeth Loconsoslo, General Counsel; and Shelia Vaughan, Bureau Chief,
Department of Correction
- Amy Flavin, Supervisor of Watershed Inspectors; Kim Hanna, Hazardous Material
Specialist; and Frances Leung, Assistant Chemical Engineer, Department of
Environmental Protection
- Captain Rochelle Jones and Eileen Sullivan, Paramedic, FDNY
- Alberta Ancrum, Special Investigator; Percy Corcoran, Supervising Investigator;
and Migdalia Figueroa, Special Investigator, Department of Investigation
- Deputy Chief Joellen Kunkel, Sergeant Lorraine Lynch and Sergeant Elizabeth
Robinson, NYPD
- Renee Blanchette, General Superintendent; Janice Thomas, Sanitation Worker;
and Gail Young, Sanitation Enforcement Agent, Department of Sanitation
- Deputy Sheriff Bevelyn Denise Barkley, Office of the Sheriff
Women's History Month is celebrated each March to acknowledge the vital
contributions of women of all ages, races and cultures to our City.
