The redesign seeks to:
- Enhance crossing safety for pedestrians and cyclists
- Reduce pedestrian crowding
- Simplify complex intersections
- Create open space
- Improve connections to the existing bicycle network
Reimagining Canal Street
NYC DOT is developing a comprehensive proposal to redesign Canal Street in Lower Manhattan. Canal Street is one of New York City’s most complex, busy, and congested corridors. The City aims to simplify travel patterns and make the corridor safer.
Community Outreach
NYC DOT began outreach in 2022 with a new round of outreach beginning in September 2025. Materials and presentations may be found below.

Draft Proposal
Following extensive community outreach and robust traffic analysis, NYC DOT developed a proposal to reimagine Canal Street. The new block-by-block design proposal encompasses the entirety of Canal Street from West Street to Bowery.
